Courageous Conversations
Background:

In any working environment, staff will experience problems and difficulties either with resources, colleagues or staff.  Not every problem will result in a conflict however every conflict is inevitably a problem.  The importance of successfully managing problems and challenging inappropriate behaviour at the earliest opportunity can never be overstated.  All too often, initial problems or conflicts are overlooked or ignored and escalate into formal complaints and grievances.  These then become damaging to staff and the organisation in terms of moral and lost opportunity costs.  In the worst scenarios, they can even result in employment tribunals.  Managing problems requires not only skills and knowledge but also confidence on behalf of the manager.  Effective training and development provides managers with these crucial abilities to be courageous and have the conversations that are necessary but often overlooked.

Overview:

This course is designed to integrate the management models, organisational mechanisms, systems, procedures/policies that are required to deal with problems in the workplace, via group activity and individual participation in practical interviews.  Its outcome is to give managers the skills and importantly the confidence to have those 'courageous conversations' that are all too often ignored.

It is divided into three main sections:

  • Identifying problems
  • Conflict management
  • Interviewing skills
Aims:
  • To equip the delegates with skills that will enable them to deal effectively with and manage problems in the workplace
  • To develop appropriate communication skills to manage others effectively
  • To recognise the difference between assertive, submissive, manipulative and aggressive behaviour
  • To develop assertive responses and strategies to manage conflict situations productively
