Managing Attendance and Absence
Background:

Managing the phenomenon of absence can be seen as one of the most difficult activities a manager can have to undertake. In the recent CIPD survey on Absence (CIPD: 2009), whilst the average level of employee absence has been seen to fall to 7.4 days per employee per year, down from eight days in last year's survey, the associated average cost of absence per employee has risen to £692 per year, slightly up from the previous year. Overall, absence costs the UK economy £17.3bn.

It is often a subject neglected by both managers and HR, with neither understanding how to deal with the situation and how the absence is impacting financially on the organisation. Managing people back to work in a fair and legal way can have positive effect on the employee, the other staff and the management of the organisation.
