Art of Delegation
Background:

Managers often say that it is quicker for them to do a task than for them to explain or train someone to do it for them. Yet effective delegation can be the making or breaking of a team. Done well, there will be common understanding of the importance that they have within the organisation and how their tasks will impact on overall performance. It also provides developmental opportunities for staff as well as being an integral part of succession planning. Done poorly, morale will fall, people will become disillusioned and the projects or activities may ultimately fail.

To allow managers to focus on the strategic goals that need to be achieved, they must delegate some tasks to their teams. How these activities are initially delegated and subsequently managed through to conclusion may potentially impact on the achievement of the set goals. The resilience of the team to cope with problems and unexpected opportunities is increased by the understanding and skill created by effective delegation.

Overview:

This workshop examines the techniques of effective delegation through practical and pragmatic activities allowing delegates to practice this in a real world context.  The workshop explores the underpinning theory of delegation as a management tool and places it firmly into the operational world of management.  Delegates work as individuals and in small groups, exploring a range of case exercises before engaging in a delegation task with other participants.  This approach allows them to not only demonstrate their understanding but gain practical experience in a supportive environment.

Aims:

  • To understand the meaning and techniques for effective delegation
  • To enable managers to understand how delegating tasks can benefit them
