Background:
Effective performance management is now widely recognised as being critical for the success of any organisation. The often ad-hoc approach of measuring staff performance, usually when things go wrong, is counterproductive and de-motivating. Similarly, the yearly appraisal which is often seen by staff as their 'MOT' is reflective on the past and provides a snapshot in time of each individual. Effective performance management is an ongoing process which reviews past and current performance, setting goals and priorities for the future. The ability to provide structured support, guidance and direction together with feedback on performance is not only valued by staff but essential to success.
