Background:
Visibility of the wider gay community is now becoming commonplace, for example, the Stonewall campaign of posters appearing across the country with the following message "some people are gay - get over it". When you consider how history has kept the lives of gay people silent by complete lack of visibility, this type of poster and the message it portrays is a clear indication of how far society has moved on. However, for some people and especially in the working environment, telling people about your sexual orientation can still present a number of challenges for the individual concerned. This may include people treating you differently as a result of finding out that information and that treatment being detrimental to the environment in which you work.
Legislation now provides better protection to lesbian, gay and bisexual workers throughout the entire employment relationship - from recruitment to dismissal. The legislation on sexual orientation discrimination also applies to terms and conditions, pay, promotions, transfers, training and education. In addition, using or disposing of premises, exercising public functions and the provision of goods, facilities and services have been incorporated within the remit of these directives.
