Coming of Age - Age Discrimination
Background:

Age discrimination is nothing new.  Does society hold a view of young people, old people and those who are described as middle aged: seventy is the new forty; fifty is the new thirty.  What does all this mean and where does it leave those individuals at the other end of the age spectrum?  Young people have negative connotations attached to them purely as a result of their age or appearance.

Legislation now offers protection from age discrimination and is evolving as a result of case law and amendments to the current regulations.

The ECHR has a current estimate that £134million will be paid out as a direct consequence of age discrimination in 2009.

Overview:

This interactive course provides an opportunity to explore the concepts of age and age discrimination.  Various approaches to the day including society's messages, individual perceptions and the historical perspective of dealing with this subject will be discussed in an open and engaging debate.

The course will use different techniques, quizzes, newspaper articles and small group work to facilitate discussions in order for delegates to explore issues. Stereotypes will be identified and challenged; language will be explored to encourage positive views of different age groups.
