Age discrimination is nothing new. Does society hold a view of young people, old people and those who are described as middle aged: seventy is the new forty; fifty is the new thirty. What does all this mean and where does it leave those individuals at the other end of the age spectrum? Young people have negative connotations attached to them purely as a result of their age or appearance.
Legislation now offers protection from age discrimination and is evolving as a result of case law and amendments to the current regulations.
The ECHR has a current estimate that £134million will be paid out as a direct consequence of age discrimination in 2009.
